Today in History February 17th

Welcome to the 48th day of the Gregorian Calendar. On February 17th, 1965, a space probe, named Ranger 8, launched into a collision course with the Moon. Its mission was to photograph the Mare Tranquillitatis in search of a suitable landing spot for the Apollo 11 lunar landing. It took Ranger 8 33.5 hours to reach the moon and transmitted a total of 7,137 surface images of the Moon in its last 23 minutes, before impacting with the surface.
