In 1581, Queen Elizabeth I knights Sir Francis Drake for completing his circumnavigation of the world. Francis Drake’s circumnavigation (a.k.a Drake’s Raiding Expedition) started in December 1577 and he finished in September 1580. Francis Drake led five ships in this voyage, and although they went to discover the world, it was actually a covert raiding voyage for England.
