Today in History February 13th

February 13 is the 44th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. In 1633, Galileo Galilei, also known as just Galileo, arrives in Rome to defend his writings on Heliocentrism before the Inquisition. Prior to 1758, the Catholic Church prohibited any books that supported the belief of heliocentrism, the theory that the Earth revolves around the sun. Galileo, on the other hand, defended this theory. He wrote a book, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, that compared the theory that the sun revolves around the Earth and the theory that the solar system revolves around the Earth. His book was perceived as an advocacy for heliocentrism, angering the Pope. Ultimately, Galileo was informally charged with heresy, relieving him of corporal punishment, but was placed under house arrest, which he stayed under for the rest of his life. Dialogue was banned, along with this, any of his future writings were banned from being published.
