Today in History February 18th

February 18th is the 49th day of the Gregorian Calendar. In 1637, during the Eight Years' War, off the coast of Cornwall, England, a Spanish Empire admiral by the name of Miguel de Horna, commander of the Armada of Flanders, intercepted an important Anglo-Dutch merchant convoy of 44 vessels, escorted by six warships. The Spanish ended up destroying or capturing 20 of the vessels, then returned to his base in Dunkirk. This conflict is known as the Battle of Lizard Point.
