In 1872, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened to the public, after being founded two years earlier. The MET was originally located in the Dodworth Building at 681 Fifth Avenue until 1873, when it was moved to a larger location in the Douglas Mansion, and finally in 1880 to its current location in Central Park. It is reported that over 6,000 guests viewed the opening exhibit. Today, it is the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere, with millions of visitors each year.
