Today in History February 26th

In 1870, the Beach Pneumatic Transit in New York City, demonstrating a subway line, opens. The BPT was the first attempt to build an underground public transit system. It was developed by Alfred Ely Beach in 1869 and it lasted for only 3 years, ending in 1873.
