February 27th is the 58th day in the Gregorian Calendar. In 1942, during World War II, an Allied strike force was defeated by a japanese task force in Java Sea in the Dutch East Indies. This was known as the Battle of the Java Sea. The Japanese gathered to attack Java, while the Allied naval sailed to intercept a Japanese invasion convoy. After a seven-hour period of intermittent battle, only two of the Allied ships remained, retreating to Batatvia.
