February 28th is the 59th day in the Gregorian Calendar. In 1525, conquistador Hernán Cortés orderd Mayan king Cuauhtémoc to be executed. Cuauhtémoc was the 11th and last Mayan ruler, he succeeded his position in 1520, but in 1521, he was captured by Hernán Cortés. Leading up to his execution, Cortés took Cuauhtémoc and several more indigenous nobles on a expedition to Honduras. During this expedition, Cuauhtémoc was allegedly conspiring to kill Cortés and other Spanairds. So, Cortés ordered his execution. Today, Cuauhtémoc's bones are supposedly in an ossuary beneath a church in Guerrero, Mexico.
