February 29th is a leap day, the 60th day in the Gregorian Calendar this year. In 1940, Hattie McDaniel won an Academy Award for her performance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind, becoming the first African American to win one. McDaniel was an American actress, singer-songwriter, and a comedian. Along with her formal entertaining career, she also entertained for causes, such as performing for soldiers during WWII, raising money for war bonds, and raising funds for Red Cross relief funds.
