Today in History March 8th

March 8th is the 68th day in the Gregorian calendar. March 8th is also International Women's Day. In 1702, Mary II's younger sister, Queen Anne, became Queen regent of Ireland, Scotland, and England. Queen regent has similar rank, title, and position as King. As opposed to Queen consort, who holds the King's social rank and status, but no power. Queen Anne's reign began in 1702 upon the death of her brother-in-law, King William III, but the formal creation of Great Britian was in 1707, her reign lasted until her death in 1714. Her greatest accomplishment is known as the Completion of the Union of England and Scotland in 1707. The union merged the two countries into a single sovereign state of the Kingdom of Great Britian, creating a unified British Parliament and laying the groundwork for a united Great Britian.
